Who We Are

About Us

Picture
A husband wife team, we're a two man company.  Scott looks after the hard work of locating the trees and processing them into clean, properly sized & processed firewood.  Melody does the majority of the marketing, & will make sure to get you measured up correctly the first time you are here, and then give you a card with your permanent record of the unit you are picking up your wood in.
Living in the area all of our married life, we watched the community grow, and we set a goal to grow with it & meet the needs of our area.  We've done that now for 21 years, and now it's time to slow down a bit and spend some time with our precious grandbabies.    We put in a gate so we can be closed, and now do wood by APPONTMENT ONLY.  We're happy to sell you any amount of wood - large or small and if our machine indicates we are here to sell you wood when you phone and the wood yard is dry - WE'RE OPEN FOR BUSINESS.  If it's rained out & you still need wood, we do have a small supply of pine in a dry area for immediate sale.

Our History

Starting out as a small hobby business over 21 years ago, we have grown to become a major competitor in the local firewood business.  Commodities continue to come in to us at prices that never go down, only up!!  We always compared pricing with others in the area to ensure that we had the lowest price, but sadly there are others who do not have the overhead we do, and will always sell for less.  (Folks who harvest trees from their own land, etc., or do a load for beer money. )  We will not even try to compete with their pricing, but will instead continue to offer quality wood at a price that will enable us to stay in business.  Scott started out splitting his first logging truck load of birch by hand before deciding that he really liked working with firewood.  He then progressed to a wheel splitter, and upgraded to a JAPA processor in 2003.  In 2007 we added a 2 cord delivery trailer to our business enabling us to deliver any quantity up to & including 2 cords of wood within a 70 km. radius.   At the end of 2021, we assessed the delivery portion of our business, and have made a decision to now only deliver within a 10 km. radius.  This will see us delivering to primarily to the North Gull Lake & Meridian Beach area.  The demand for quality wood keeps increasing, and in 2015, we upgraded to a Cord Master, Cord King processor in an effort to keep up to our growing customer base.

CHANGES . . .  Always changes !

For the first 15years that we had been in the firewood  business, Scott had also worked a job driving a semi for a pipeline construction company.  Of course in the last several years, he had worked out less and less; not by choice, but rather due to the Alberta Advantage disappearing.  In 2016 Scott's job disappeared.   As we look back on the last two years of his employment, we realize that God had a hand in this playing out.  We grew less dependent on that outside paycheck, but rather focused on growing our business into the best customer service experience we could.  To that end, we diversified and added a small band mill to our operation.  Often we gets trees that are just HUGE - and it seems a pity to process them into firewood.  We now cut custom wood - not only your run of the mill fence boards, but fireplace mantles, odd size fascia boards that you cannot just 'buy', specialty birch chunks for wood turning - that type of thing.  We've already had several sales in this area, and are looking forward to where this side of our business will go.  Time to cut, or the lack thereof,  is always a determining factor in how much wood can be cut. (I will be posting photos of some of the beautiful work our customers have done, but again that time factor plays in here.  :)  )
A few years ago we had the privilege of working with a local fencer on a large contract for a historic project.  We were able to provide tamarack fence posts and rails for the job - a product he could not have obtained from the local fencing supply store. This gave the job the 'authentic touch' he was going for.

A local wedding venue has purchased tamarack timbers and a pine vanity top for their facilities.  The custom wood market is exciting, and growing.  We are looking forward to seeing just where it is that God leads us to in the years to come, but really believe that for now it is to remain right here where we will continue to  offer the best customer service that we can while maintaining a balance between work and family - and work and semi-retirement.    We believe that with planning in the timing of when to pick up your wood,  we can still be the firewood yard that you can count on!!  The decision to slow down, and semi-retire has not been an easy one, but it's one that will help us to keep doing what we are doing for several more years without burning out.
